Caves have been considered one of the most difficult austere environments to conduct a SAR operation.  Naturally occurring underground spaces present a host of challenges to successful rescue operations.  Recent events such as the cave rescue in Thailand and the Riesending cave rescue in Germany which received worldwide attention broadcast the difficulties involved.  We will discuss the cave rescue specialty within Canada, the capabilities and resources available, and challenges of maintaining a capability for low frequency but highly resource intensive and technically challenging rescues.
